Wishaw Golf Club

History

A golf course in Wishaw was first suggested at a meeting in the cookery rooms of Wishaw Public School in 1894. Four years later, a nine-hole course over three fields with rough but ‘good quality’ turf became Wishaw Golf Course. This course, between Sunnyside and the Caledonian Railway existed until 1910. Ladies and Gents sections were in existence from the outset although a boys’ section was not founded until 1952. Visitors have always been welcomed at Wishaw and in 1907 they paid one shilling (5p) for the privilege.

In 1910, the demand for membership saw the course become 18 holes and the clubhouse extended.

During the war years the course was reduced and some land given over to grazing sheep. Major changes were made to the course after the war with the lower field being sold for farming, eventually becoming part of the iron ore terminal in Ravenscraig Steel Works.

By 1920, additional land was rented and an 18-hole course re-established.

In 1934, the club undertook its biggest upheaval. The course, having been designated for house building, necessitated a search for a new location. Three fields at Foggielea, Brickhole and High Avenue Parks were deemed suitable and construction began.

Legendary course designer and former Open champion James Braid laid out the new course and plans for a new Clubhouse were made, the latter formally opening in 1936.

During the Second World War the course was again reduced to 15 holes and the land given over to grazing which was still taking place in the Summer of 1948, three years after the war ended. In April 1949, the course was re-established as 18 holes.

Further parcels of land in and around the course were purchased from Lord Belhaven and Motherwell District Council through the years to the last purchase in 1990.
